Check each port and the whole switch.
PoE selection has two separate parts: whether a port supports the standard required by the endpoint, and whether the switch has enough total power for the planned load. A switch can have spare ports without enough available power for another device.
Build a list of the exact access points, cameras and controllers. Record their manufacturer power requirements and compare them with the supported port standards and total budget of the proposed switch. Do not assume that every Ethernet port supplies power.
A faster endpoint needs a suitable path.
The access point port, cable, switch port and uplink all form part of the connection. A faster access point cannot remove a bottleneck elsewhere in that path. Decide which traffic stays within the local network and which traffic depends on the internet service.
Uplinks between switches need particular attention when several endpoints share them. Network storage, camera streams and client devices can use the same infrastructure. The assessment should identify the expected workload without treating every advertised maximum as a simultaneous real-world result.
Match the media at both ends.
Copper Ethernet, fibre modules and direct-attach cables have different interfaces and distance limits. When selecting an uplink accessory, check the supported module, port speed and connector at both ends. An adapter that physically fits is not enough evidence of a supported connection.
Record the chosen modules and cable lengths in the equipment list. Leave access to labels, ports and replaceable parts when arranging the cabinet. This makes later additions easier to assess.
Separate PoE capacity from backup runtime.
A switch power budget describes how much endpoint power it can supply. A UPS has a different job: keeping its connected load operating when its normal supply is interrupted. Its runtime depends on that load and the battery condition.
If backup power is part of the scope, identify which equipment actually needs to remain operating, including any upstream internet equipment. Australian power connections and the intended configuration must be confirmed before specifying a US-catalogue power product.
Bring these details to your assessment.
- Endpoint model and power requirement
- Per-port PoE standard
- Total planned powered load
- Switch port and uplink speeds
- Compatible cable, module or adapter
- Rack space, ventilation and backup requirements
